BREAKING: New NPR story makes the case. Call now to keep FERC shut down.

A great new NPR report out today shows why we need to stop the Senate from restoring a quorum at FERC.1 This is one of those media articles — well researched, solidly written, and beamed to a national audience of millions on public radio this morning — that can change a campaign. And the timing is perfect: If we can block a vote for another few weeks, we can prevent approval of any more fracked gas pipelines this summer — because FERC will be without a quorum at least until September. But one news story isn’t enough to change 51 Senators’ minds. So I’m asking you to back up your email with a call TODAY. Call Your Senators at (202) 224-3121 (you’ll need to tell the operator which Senators you want to talk to or which state you live in), and urge them to vote “NO” on Trump’s Nominees for FERC. You can simply say: I am calling to urge Senator ___________ to vote against President Trump’s two nominees, Neil Chatterjee and Robert Powelson, to be commissioners of FERC. Their records make clear that …

Stop the Senate Dirty Energy Bill!

Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced a nearly unprecedented plan to bring his pet Dirty Energy Bill to the floor without any committee hearings or review.1 Then, he announced plans to delay Congress’ usual August recess by two weeks.2 Both of those decisions indicate that Republicans want to use the next four weeks to ram through a whole bunch of really dangerous legislation. And for McConnell, a long-time vassal to King Coal, there is no policy more important than expanding the use of fossil fuels.3 Sign here to tell your Senator to vote NO on McConnell’s #DirtyEnergyBill!   Here’ the basic outline of the bill:4 We already blocked a similar bill in the last Congress, a bill Mitch McConnell supported strongly;5 The new Dirty Energy Bill fast-tracks approval of of fracked gas exports (LNG); It would give FERC (who is already under fire and without a quorum) vast new powers to ram pipelines and other infrastructure projects through our towns; It authorizes new research for experimental ways to frack the ocean and recover dangerous new sources of offshore gas; …

We Wouldn’t Exist Without Net Neutrality

We all depend on Net Neutrality to take action. Help save it before July 17! Imagine a world where Donald Trump’s tweets are delivered faster, instantly, to every device in the world, but our messages and emails planning protest and resistance take hours to be delivered. It’s not a nightmare (well, it would be) — it’s what the internet could look like without Net Neutrality. Net neutrality is a basic concept: your internet provider cannot slow down your browsing on certain pages, block websites, or charge apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience. All legal content is treated the same. It’s been crucial to new movements around the world because it ensures activists can share news and ideas at the same speed as corporations and governments. If you streamed a video from Standing Rock, shared a photo of that Greenpeace RESIST banner over the white house, or just shared an online petition with a friend – you’re using Net Neutrality. And now, that’s all in danger. Click here to send a message using the coalition action page to the …

FERC doesn’t work, let’s keep it that way

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), is a rogue federal agency charged with reviewing all major inter-state fracked gas projects – including pipelines, compressor stations, and export terminals.1 They also have broad powers to set rules and rates for state and regional electric grids, which can have a huge impact on the price of solar and wind power vs fossil fuels.2 You probably remember that FERC is notorious for abusing its legal authority and peoples’ rights. They routinely strip people of their legal right to challenge pipeline projects until property rights have been violated, forests cut, and people are forced to live next to dangerous fossil fuel projects.3 For the last few months, dozens of communities have had a reprieve, of sorts, because without a quorum of three commissioners FERC can’t approve any fracked gas infrastructure. Right now only acting chair Cheryl LaFleur remains.4 And we aim to keep it that way. Click here to send a letter your Senators and tell them to vote NO on Trump’s FERC nominees. No Senator who claims to care about the climate, property rights, or the …

Every Branch, Every bank

Our #NoDAPL movement is celebrating the fact that a federal judge ordered the US Army Corp of Engineers to re-do its environmental review of the Dakota Access Pipeline. But the judge didn’t shut down the pipeline (yet) and we still need to take action to stop DAPL, and all pipelines proposed in North America. More than 150,000 people, representing more than $4.3 billion dollars in assets, have signed on to demand an end to the dig, dump, burn capitalism embodied by these pipelines.1 And now, indigenous leaders are asking for your help to deliver the message to “every bank, every branch” this summer.2 Will you sign up here to host a #DeFundPipelines delivery event in Columbia? It’s been months since President Trump’s reckless executive orders to ram through DAPL and other pipelines. Since then we’ve learned that the company behind DAPL, Energy Transfer Partners used money from bankers and pension funds to hire military contractor TigerSwan to spy on encampments and coordinate brutal responses that included pepper spray, rubber bullets and blasting water protectors with water cannons in freezing weather.3 By the time …

Take on the 17 Banks that finance Tar Sands Pipelines

*Editor’s note* I kept looking for a break in the Trump news to send this email, instead, I emailed out an earlier version of it 20 minutes before a special prosecutor was appointed. *sigh*If you’re still looking for a way to respond directly — by calling for impeachment,  an independent investigation, or a lick of sanity — then follow the links and know that we all say Amen. If you’ve had enough Trump news for a moment, and are looking for something else to do that really makes a difference, read on. ~Drew The Global Movement to Divest is Working. Earlier this month in New York and around the world, we saw the power of the Global Divestment Mobilization. Activists rallied in Sweden at the home of the Nobel Peace Prize, at over a dozen Chase Bank branch locations in Seattle, and on the terrace inside of Trump Tower in New York.1 Each action was unique, but they all carried the same basic demand: to have our neighbors, our elected leaders, and our institutions divest from the very fossil fuel …

7 years ago was the BP spill, in 9 days we’ll see you at the People’s Climate March

Donald Trump hates big protests. So we’re gonna give him the biggest one yet to cap the first 100 days of resistance. I’m sure you’ve already heard about the PCM March for climate, jobs, and justice on April 29. What you might not have heard or remembered is that today is the 7th anniversary of the BP horizon oil spill.1 Seven years ago today, the rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and started the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Almost five million barrels of oil were spilled, and less than 25% have ever been recovered.2 But despite the loss of life, livelihoods, and long-lasting health impacts – no person was ever sent to jail.2 And things are not likely to get better under Trump: The EPA, is facing a budget cut of nearly one-third.3 Scheduled for elimination are programs to clean up the Gulf of Mexico, address environmental justice, and criminal enforcement divisions to punish polluters like BP.4 Last month, the Department of the Interior announced 73 million more acres of the Gulf will be auctioned off this …

Rise with Standing Rock

Knifing tipis and pointing loaded rifles at indigenous organizers: That’s how they cleared the prayer camp at Standing Rock.1 The closure of the main camp at Standing Rock was a hard thing to watch, even from afar. Police moved through the smoke of structures burned in ceremonial fires, arresting and chasing down anyone who remained.2 But if, like me, you watched the final hours of Oceti Sakowin Camp with deep sadness, you should know this is not the end of our movement or fight. We have work to do. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Indigenous Environmental Network, Native Organizers Alliance and many of our other allies have called for a mass demonstration on March 10th to carry the momentum from Standing Rock forward.3 Join ‘Native Nations Rising: Rise with Standing Rock’ on March 10 to stand in solidarity with Standing Rock and Indigenous nations across the county. If you’ll be in or near Washington D.C. next week, RSVP here to join us for a march to the White House If you live elsewhere, not to worry, there are sister marches …

Check out what you did to DeFundDAPL

** Update** I was writing you a message about what we did to De-Fund the Dakota Access Pipeline (# DeFundDAPL) is working. And then Trump’s Army Corps of Engineers announced that they were ignoring the law, tribal sovereignty, US treaties, and common decency to ram through the Dakota access pipeline. In response, I’m encouraging everyone to join the massive “last stand” day of action happening today. Dozens of events are already planned around the county – Find yours and show up today. And then stay tuned for more info on how we can stop this pipeline. Here’s what I was going to say: Last week we announced that over 700,000 people, representing over $2.3 billion (with a B), were ready to move their money out of the 17 banks funding the Dakota Access pipeline. Boy, did we get their attention. In the las week, Danish bank DNB has agreed to stop financing DAPL unless they re-route or cancel the pipeline in accordance with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s wishes. Citibank, Wells Fargo, ING and more have all agreed to meet with indigenous …

Help shut down the banks funding the Dakota Access Pipeline

You’ve signed on and spoken out, now it’s time to show up: Donald Trump has signed executive memos intended to expedite the construction of the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines.1 But there’s something he doesn’t know or expect: A growing movement of over half a million consumers around the world, representing over $2.3 billion dollars, are calling on the 17 banks funding the Dakota Access Pipeline to cancel or re-negotiate their loans.2 If they do, DAPL will be broke and construction will have to be delayed or canceled. But we need your help next week to starve the black snake by cutting off its funding. Can you RSVP to host or attend a #DeFundDAPL rally next week at a bank branch near you? We’re ready to support you with sample materials, action plans, fliers, and more. Let’s be perfectly clear: Trump’s executive memos will not get DAPL or KXL built. The corporate owners — Energy Transfer Partners, Sunoco Logistics, Transcanada et al — still need permits, approval from the Army Corps of Engineers, and most importantly MONEY to build …
